In line with policies to curb the flaring of natural gas in refineries, shutting down all flaring torches at the second South Pars Refinery in the city of Asalouyeh, Bushehr Province within two years is in the cards, the head of South Pars Gas Field’s 2nd Refinery said.
“Despite efforts to curtail the amount of associated petroleum gases (APG), flaring of natural gas has reached 120 million cubic meters in the 2nd Refinery,” Mahdi Gerami Shirazi was quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency on Monday.
In an initiative that is being implemented by the National Iranian Oil Company in collaboration with an unnamed foreign company to reduce gas flaring to zero, associated gases will be recycled and processed. The flaring of APG is an important safety measure at many oil and gas production sites as it prevents industrial plant equipment from over-pressuring and exploding. Moreover, burning high levels of APG is a major source of air pollution.
